The scroll was modeled after photographs of scrolls from ancient Jewish Synagogues. Jewish Scriptures were written on scrolls rather than books. Printing in books with a press, such as the Gutenberg press, didn't become common until somewhere between 1480 and 1500. The book of Revelation was written around the late first century AD. Therefore the book, of Revelation chapter 5, was a scroll.

Seals were often placed on the inside of the scroll. Break an internal seal to unroll a section of the scroll. Break the next seal to unroll and read the next section of the scroll.
