About the Graphics

Candle

The following verse inspired the candle image and animation.

Unto the angel of the church of Ephesus write; These things saith he that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand, who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks; (Revelation 2:1 KJV Bible).

The seven candlesticks are the seven churches which the book of Revelation discusses in the next few chapters.

...and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches. (Revelation 1:20 KJV).

Artwork Preparation

The animated flame with candle were prepared with 3ds Max and After Effects. Video of a burning flame was mapped to a flat plane above the candle, in 3ds Max. A projector light creates the flickering light and shadow on the candle. An elliptical mask and music were added with After Effects.

Scroll

Seals were often placed on the inside of the scroll. Break an internal seal to unroll a section of the scroll. Break the next seal to unroll and read the next section of the scroll. The seven seals on the scroll of Revelation represent sequentially revealing God's end time events from His book. The following Bible verse inspired the scroll graphic.

And I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals (Revelation 5:1).

The scroll of Revelation begins the book's account of end time visions. The scroll includes seven seals. Each seal begins a new event. The seventh seal reveals seven trumpets. Each trumpet begins a new event. The seventh trumpet reveals seven bowls. Each bowl begins a new event.

Artwork Preparation

The scroll was modeled after photographs of scrolls from ancient Jewish Synagogues. The Jewish Scriptures were written on scrolls rather than books. Printing in books with a press, such as the Gutenberg press, didn't become common until somewhere between 1480 and 1500. The book of Revelation was written around the late first century AD. Therefore the book, of Revelation chapter 5, was a scroll.

Animation

Each image was prepared, with animation, for the book, Illustrated Apocalypse.
